Michael Horowitz

Michael Horowitz, Ph.D., has served as a higher education leader and faculty member since 1988. He became The Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s president in 2000, at a time when it was a single program, single campus institution with 215 students. Today, The Chicago School’s (TCS) enrollment exceeds 3,000 students who study at one of six on-ground locations and a thriving Online Campus. With four campuses in Southern California, a China Office, and a new campus being planned in 2010 for Washington, D.C., The Chicago School has emerged as an international institution, the largest nonprofit school of its kind in the nation, with more than 20 degree programs spanning all branches of psychology and behavioral sciences. Over the last decade, the school also has become a recognized source of innovative approaches to behavioral science training, scholarship, applications, and service to the community. New initiatives charted under his stewardship include the Forensic Center, Center for Multicultural and Diversity Studies, Center for Latino Mental Health, Center for International Studies, and Garfield Park Preparatory Academy, a K-8 public contract school that began in fall 2009 as part of Chicago’s Renaissance 2010 initiative.

In May 2009, Dr. Horowitz oversaw the founding of the nonprofit TCS Education System, which carries a mission of preparing innovative, engaged, purposeful agents of change who serve the global community. The system provides the means for achieving a vision shared by The Chicago School’s Board of Trustees and Dr. Horowitz to expand the school’s model of education to new professional disciplines such as health and education. A definitive agreement is in place for the Pasadena-based Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School to join the system in early 2010.

Dr. Horowitz's professional and scholarly interests include organizational leadership, political advocacy, graduate education, and the expansion of professional psychology education and practice. Before joining TCS, Dr. Horowitz was dean and professor at the Arizona School of Professional Psychology. He also is a past president of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Horowitz earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University and a Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in Psychology and Political Science. He was honored at Columbia with the Cumming Prize for Outstanding Psychology Graduate.
